GTL: The Boldest Beauty Looks of the 2016 Met Gala

GTL – Get the Look, not Gym, Tan, Laundry, duh!

When this year’s  Met Gala theme, “Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology,” was announced, I instantly had visions of cyberpunk pretty — sharp slashes of eyeliner, manicures using bits of motherboards, and cascades of chrome. While most played it safe this year, letting their custom glittering gowns (crafted with the latest technology) do all of the talking, I was psyched to see many stars embracing the theme fully and stepping out of their regular red carpet glamor routine. I got the details on how to recreate the looks straight from the hairstylists and makeup artist to ensure you stand out at the next social gathering on your calendar.

Ciara’s Hair — Stylist Cesar Ramirez spent months crafting Ciara’s chic silver wig to make sure they cast the right chromatic effect. For the big day, he prepped it with the Mizani True Texture Style Refresher Milk before drying, curling, and setting the tresses. Once cooled, he brushed everything with the brand’s HRM Spray and sculpted each wave in the front and classic pin curls in the back, securing them with multiple silver bobby pins.

Katy Perry’s Makeup — Makeup maestro Todd Delano opted for a more alien-inspired look, erasing her brows with by bleaching them before evening her tone with CoverGirl’s Ready, Set Gorgeous Foundation and contouring. Delano used the brand’s TruNAKED Eyeshadow Palette in Nudes o contour the eyes as well, lining Perry’s water line with the Liquiline Blast Eyeliner in Blue Bloom and a few coats of her Katy  Kat Eye Mascara in Perry Blue. He finished the look with a swipe of her new Katy Kat Matte Lipstick in Perry Panther.

Lupita Nyong’o’s Hair — OMG—I loved this look! Lupita is always one to watch on the red carpet whether it’s her matching her eye makeup to her gown or rocking a fresh new ‘do that quickly becomes a trend. The sky-high hairstyle was inspired by Nina Simone and the molded hairstyles of African women and became a red carpet sensation. #BigHairDontCare.

Lady Gaga — Drawing on Gaga’s influence on fashion in the age of technology, makeup maven Sarah Tanno the songstress’ rocker edge by highlighting her skin with NARS’s Fervor Dual-Intensity Blush for a classic ’80s contour (to go with her big hair) before adding a whisp of smoke to the eye with the brand’s Desdemona Dual-Intensity Eyeshadow and applying faux lashes. She finished the look with a bold red-orange, matte lip, using the brand’s upcoming Mineshaft Velvet Lip Glide.

Zendaya Coleman — The look had ethereal, almost other-worldly aura to it with a diffused dark brown smoky eye that covered most of her eye socket, contouring, and a matching glossy lip. Coleman brought out her sleek rounded bob wig for the event, which gave me flashbacks to when she first wore it to the 2015 Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards. It’s such a shift from her go-to glamor that I couldn’t get enough of it!

Rachel McAdams’s Makeup — Makeup artist Kayleen McAdams (yup, that’s Rachel’s sister) got the star to indulge in the dark side to complement her gilded gown. After evening her skin tone with NARS’s Velvet Matte Skin Tint, she added a slight flush to the cheek with the brand’s iconic Orgasm Blush. Skipping the eye, save for a few swipes of mascara, McAdams polished her pout with the Liv Audacious Lipstick.

Olivia Wilde — Makeup magician Mélanie Inglessis channeled Wilde’s stylish Vinyl character, Devon Finestra, with an avant-garde eye look to complement her show-stopping ponytail. After evening and highlighting her skin, Inglessis applied the silver shadow in the Revlon Illuminance Creme Shadows in Precious Metals to the middle of the lid before mixing the same silver with the black from the Illuminance Creme Shadows in Black Magic, blending it into the crease, and sharpening the outer corner in black. For a serious smolder, she smudged the mixed shadows along her bottom lashes, following it up with the brand’s PhotoReady Kajal Matte Eye Pencil in Coal and mascara on both the top and bottom lashes. Inglessis finished the look by layering the ColorStay Lip Liner in Natural under the Super Lustrous Lipstick in Honey Bare to balance the bold eye look.

Kristen Stewart — Stewart loves her smudged liner but added a metallic moment for the Met gala in the form of squares of silver on her lids. She paired with an undone, braided half-updo to enhance her brand of chic yet grungy glamor.

Beyoncé — Last, but certainly not least, Queen Bey was set to smolder for her first red carpet appearance post-Lemonade. Looking so reckless in her (latex) Givenchy dress, she started a fire with black smoky eye and a matte nude lip that stand ins tark contrast with her love of shimmer.
