GTL: The Boldest Beauty Looks of the 2018 Met Gala

GTL – Get the Look, not Gym, Tan, Laundry, duh!

When this year’s  Met Gala theme, “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” was announced, I instantly had visions of crystal tears in homage to the weeping statues of saints, Della Robbia blues of the Virgin Mary, some swaths of silver to symbolize the Crusades, but definitely lots and lots of gold. And I was not disappointed, as many not only took the theme head-on with the amazing array of gorgeous gowns and headpieces but also extended it into their beauty to create looks that are true works of art that I couldn’t get enough of. With proms, dances, and even weddings coming up on shortly on everyone’s social calendars, I scored the details on how to recreate the looks straight from the hairstylists and makeup artists should you want to channel Catholic chic at your next big event.

Rihanna —  As she’s practically the Pope of the Met Gala, I love how Rihanna and her glam squad always manages to elevate the theme far beyond anyone’s expectations. For example, hairstylist Yusef swept up the songstress’s strands to fit under her pearl-encrusted Margiella miter (that’s the pope hat, FYI), using Phyto’s Workable Holding Spray and the Shine Defining Wax to keep it in place and the brand’s Specific Curl Legend Energizing Spray to define the curl of the two tendrils that hung loose. According to Instagram, Damone Roberts bleached and sculpted her brows with his own brow powder in Ginger in order to blend into her skin, which Fenty’s Global Makeup Artist Priscilla Ono evened out with the brand’s iconic Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation. Ono then gave the star a charcoal grey smoky eye with what we hope are soon-to-be-on-shelves shadows and contoured her face with the brand’s Match Stix Matte Skinstick in Truffle. She polished off the look by applying the Mattemoiselle Plush Matte Lipstick in Spanked. To keep her glittering from tip to toe, Mel Ottenberg gave her a sparkling silver manicure.

Eiza González — I’ve been keeping my eye on Gonzalez every since she lit up the Oscars in her vibrant yellow dress and popping coral lip. And she truly stunned with a deep blue smoky eye that was perfectly color coordinated with the series of TASAKI Atelier sapphires she accessorized her sexy nun-inspired Prabal Gurung gown with. She balanced the bold eye look with a neutral pink lip, but it was the crystal tears that dripped along her cheek that truly took the look to the next level and made her look utterly ethereal in this shot in particular. I just wish I could find out who was behind the look to give them the credit they deserve!

SZA — The singer’s Halo-inspired headpiece was one of many that caught my eye, but her gorgeously defined curls kept my attention, thanks to hairstylist Randy Stodghill, who noted that he used Oribe products to get the look (I’m guessing the brand’s Curl Control Silkening Crème for hydration and the Curl Shaping Mousse for definition and hold). For her sparkling smoky eye, makeup artist Samuel Paul pulled out the Deep Velvet shadow from Pat McGrath’s Mthshp Subliminal Platinum Bronze Palette extending it out to her temples before patting on the palette’s VR Violet shade in the center of the lid, finishing it with a flick of the Perma Precision Liquid Eyeliner and a set of gold tears that came courtesy of CHRISHABANA. For her pout, he applied the brand’s Permagel Ultra Lip Pencil in Ground Control and Skin Show lipstick in Lust Angeles before topping everything off with a layer of clear gloss.
