While some of us spent New Years recovering from champagne-induced hangovers or getting a start on our New Year’s resolutions, I know most of us at some point scrolled through our 2018 horoscopes to find out what’s written in the stars for us. But makeup artist and YouTube sensation Marion Moretti, a fellow Pisces like myself and beauty queen Rihanna, used all of the astrological signs for a spectacular series of makeup looks you have to see to believe!
Moretti started the year off by making a serious splash on Instagram by posting customized beauty looks, even using prothetics, wigs, and plenty of glitter, for each zodiac sign throughout the month of January. But Moretti told me that she had the idea for the extravagant astrological looks in the works as far back as June 2017. “I started with a Gay Pride series last year, and then listed what series I would like to do. Zodiac was one of them,” she said in an email, noting that she pulled inspiration for each look from a variety of sources, building the looks bit by bit with the colors, animals, and figures each sign is based on.
It’s not the first series she’s created for her YouTube channel (she’s currently serving up a slew of heart-infused makeup looks perfect for Valentine’s Day). But she admits it’s the first that has really taken off with her followers, garnering tens of thousands of likes on each pictures and one-minute clip she’s posted on the platform. “I guess it’s because everyone felt concerned by their own sign so they were more engaged,” Moretti explained. And she’s been on the look out to see if any of her followers have attempted to recreate and remix some of the looks in the series. “I [haven’t] checked my hashtag since a long time,” she said. “I always ask them to use this hashtag so I can see their recreations, it’s the only way for me to be sure to catch them.”
But get ready to roll up sleeves and blend, blend, blend if you’re pllaning to try of them, as Moretti noted it took her between an hour and a half to two hours to create each look from start to finish. The most complicated of the bunch? The final Pisces look. “I had troubles choosing the wig and accessories to match the look I created,” she said, before settling on a wig and headpiece that gives Ariel a glamorous run for her money.
Of course, you might not have the time, product, or patience to fully lean into these looks, even though I think they’d be a big hit at summer music festivals (just be sure to pack a ton of setting spray to keep it all in place). But that doesn’t mean you can’t take some of the elements associated with your sign to spice things up, like dabbing a few dots of eyeliner or cream shadow just under your brow to bring out you inner Aries without letting your horns show. Or channel the Pisces spirit by applying a few pearls around the perimter of your eye look with a little lash glue. Or instead of sticking to a feline flick, add a two more lines to the tips to add some arrows and pay homage to your Sagittarius sign. I’ll be keeping my birth chart close to my vanity the next time I need a little inspiration!
